As a basic raw material industry in China, pulp and paper industry occupies an important position in the national economy, with products closely related to people's production and life and widely used in many fields such as culture, education, production and manufacturing, national defense and military industry .

Since its establishment in 1956, China National Pulp and Paper Research Institute (CNPPRI) , always adhereing to the glorious mission and development concept of inheriting civilization, pioneering and innovation, has contributed significantly to the development of China's paper industry at all stages, making important contributions to the industry from scratch, from small to large, from weak to strong, promoting industrial technological progress, and meeting the needs of national economic development. As the only national-level professional scientific research institution in the national paper industry, China Pulp and Paper Research Institute has rich scientific and technological resources and comprehensive industrial service capabilities. It is the supporting construction and operation unit of the National Engineering Laboratory for Pulp and Paper Industry, the National Technical Committee for Standardization of Paper Industry, the China Techical Association of Paper Industry and the China Paper Association, and the national international scientific and technological cooperation base recognized by the Ministry of Science and Technology. 

In 2017, CNPPRI ushered a new era of development. as it joined China Poly Group Corporation Limited together with its superior company, CHINA LIGHT INDUSTRY GROUP CO.,LTD. According to the new strategic plan, CNPPRI will strive to be a leading innovative platform and comprehensive service institution for the paper industry, more specifically, to be a leader for technological innovation and commercialization of scientific and technological achievements, a top-level provider of multi-industry services, and an important promoter for international cooperation of the paper industry.
